Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) Extract

Sea Buckthorn

The use of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) in skin care dates back to the Aztecs of pre-Hispanic Mexico, who collected sap from the leaves, blended it with honey and egg yolk and used it as a soothing ointment for burns. Today we know the refined extract is a superb skin soother and firming agent.

Like most cacti, the leaves of the plant are modified stem segments that can store large quantities of water during the dry season. The extract’s high content of water-binding compounds make it a powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture onto the skin even in rinse-off formulas. High in B vitamins and vitamins A and C, it also contains the key active piscidic acid, a powerful antioxidant that prevents the formation of free radicals and protects the skin from oxidative stress

Skin-Firming Effect with UV radiation

Prickley Pear Results Graph

A clinical study conducted with 20 women ages 18 to 60 confirms the firming and protective effects of prickly pear extract. A 2% emulsion and a placebo emulsion were applied twice daily to the skin of these subjects for two weeks. Results showed a measurable improvement of firmness when compared to the areas treated with the placebo.

The test sites were then exposed to UV radiation (1.0 MED). Three days later, without re-application of emulsions, the test areas were re-evaluated. Skin firmness was found to be reduced in areas treated with the placebo, while areas treated with the 2% emulsion were unchanged.
